NEXT vs. biBerk for Restaurants

NEXT and biBerk both let restaurant owners buy coverage directly online, but they are backed by different groups and packaged differently. ERGO NEXT is part of Munich Re’s ERGO Group and sells online and through agents. biBerk is part of the Berkshire Hathaway Insurance Group and sells direct online and by phone. Your concept, alcohol sales and staffing decide which fits.

This page is for owners who have already decided they like the idea of buying online and want to know how these two direct options differ for a food business. We also cover the one thing neither storefront does for you: shop your restaurant against other markets. Details reflect each company’s published information; coverage is always subject to underwriting and policy terms.

Two direct-to-owner models, two different backers

NEXT Insurance became ERGO NEXT Insurance in January 2026, after ERGO, a Munich Re company, completed its full acquisition in July 2025. NEXT’s model is a fast online application with policy management through its app, and it also runs an agent program.

biBerk describes itself as part of the Berkshire Hathaway Insurance Group and says it insures businesses directly, without agents or brokers in the middle. Owners buy online or speak with biBerk’s licensed staff by phone. biBerk does run a partner program, but it states it does not appoint individual retail agents and works instead through select wholesale partners. For most restaurant owners, buying biBerk means buying direct.

Head-to-head: NEXT and biBerk

  • How you buy — NEXT: online application and app-based policy management, plus agents / biBerk: direct online or by phone with licensed staff, no retail agents
  • Backing — NEXT: ERGO NEXT Insurance, part of the ERGO Group, a Munich Re company / biBerk: part of the Berkshire Hathaway Insurance Group
  • Core restaurant lines — NEXT: general liability, BOP, commercial property, workers’ comp, commercial auto, cyber, EPLI, product liability / biBerk: workers’ comp, general liability, BOP, commercial auto, umbrella and cyber
  • Liquor liability — NEXT: listed as its own coverage for food and bar businesses / biBerk: offered as an add-on endorsement
  • Other restaurant add-ons — NEXT: product liability and EPLI listed / biBerk: food spoilage, equipment breakdown, hired and non-owned auto and employment practices endorsements
  • Workers’ comp eligibility — NEXT: comp offered for restaurants / biBerk: says comp generally requires one or more employees in most states
  • Food businesses named — NEXT: restaurants, bakeries, caterers, coffee shops, food trucks, food vendors / biBerk: a long list including bar and grills, buffets, diners, delis, food trucks, pizzerias, sports bars, taverns and wine bars
  • Who shops alternatives — both: no one; each quotes only its own product

Matching the carrier to the concept

Coffee kiosk or grab-and-go counter. Either can fit an owner who wants a quick online general liability or BOP policy with minimal back-and-forth. NEXT fits best when app-based self-service is the priority; biBerk fits when you would rather reach a person by phone during the buying process.

Neighborhood tavern or sports bar. biBerk names taverns, sports bars and wine bars in its restaurant appetite, and offers liquor as an endorsement. NEXT lists liquor liability for food and bar businesses too. With alcohol-heavy concepts, the practical question is whether the liquor limit and any assault and battery wording match what your landlord and your risk actually require. See our bar insurance page.

Catering and food trucks. Both name caterers and food trucks. Off-site events bring certificate requests from venues, often on short notice, so confirm how quickly each can issue a certificate naming the venue. Our catering insurance guide explains the usual venue demands.

Growing multi-location group. Once you are managing several leases, a mix of owned and personal delivery vehicles and an umbrella, a direct storefront puts all the coordination on you. That is where an agency relationship tends to earn its keep.

Coverage checklist before you bind either one

  • General liability — the backbone for guest injuries and foodborne illness allegations
  • Liquor liability — needed separately if you sell alcohol; confirm limits and any assault and battery exclusion
  • Property and business income — protects kitchen equipment, build-out and lost revenue after a fire
  • Food spoilage — a power outage or compressor failure can empty a walk-in overnight
  • Equipment breakdown — mechanical failure of refrigeration, ovens and HVAC is usually excluded from basic property
  • Workers’ comp — required for employees in most states and the policy that pays for kitchen burns and cuts
  • Hired and non-owned auto — closes the gap when staff deliver in their own cars
  • Umbrella — adds limits over GL, auto and employer’s liability when a lease or contract calls for more

Pricing factors both underwriters look at

Direct or not, the rating inputs are similar: your food-to-alcohol sales mix, square footage, cooking methods and fire suppression, hours (closing after midnight changes the picture), payroll by class, delivery exposure, location and claims history. Neither company publishes a flat restaurant price, and quotes for two similar-looking pizzerias can differ because of those details.

To put your best application forward, keep hood-cleaning invoices and suppression inspection tags current, have a written alcohol-service policy with trained staff, and report payroll and sales accurately so an audit does not produce a bill later. Where an independent agency fits in when both sell direct

Buying direct means the quote you see is the only quote you see. Provident Financial Group is an independent agency: you complete one application and we shop it across the markets available through our agency for your state and concept, then show you the options side by side. Because biBerk sells direct, it would not be one of our quotes, but you can hold any direct quote next to ours and we will walk through the differences line by line.

After you bind, we issue certificates of insurance for landlords, venues and delivery platforms and re-shop your coverage at renewal. Call (866) 964-6660 with questions.

Frequently asked questions

Are NEXT and biBerk insurance companies or agencies?

Both present themselves as direct sellers. NEXT operates as ERGO NEXT Insurance within Munich Re’s ERGO Group, and biBerk says it is part of the Berkshire Hathaway Insurance Group and insures businesses directly.

Can I buy biBerk through an independent agent?

Generally no. biBerk states it does not appoint individual retail agents and works with select wholesale partners, so most owners buy it direct online or by phone.

Which one covers bars as well as restaurants?

biBerk lists taverns, sports bars and wine bars among the businesses it insures, and NEXT lists liquor liability for food and bar businesses. Acceptance still depends on underwriting and your alcohol sales mix.

Is it worth comparing a direct quote against agency quotes?

Usually, yes. Comparing coverage details like liquor limits, spoilage and business income waiting periods side by side is the only way to know whether a direct quote actually matches what you need.
